【Botanical Origin】
The dried, mature pericarp of Areca catechu L. of the Palm family Areca.
【Characteristics】
The dried pericarp is usually longitudinally cut into two. Those that have not been loosened are oval-shaped, gourd-like, 5-7 cm long, about 3 cm wide, and about 1 cm thick. The exocarp is grayish-brown-yellow, with brown spots and longitudinal cracks. The mesocarp is yellowish-white fiber, the fibers are arranged longitudinally, the outer layer is loose and filamentous, and the inner layer fibers are thicker. The inner wall is concave, brown or dark brown, with a smooth, hard shell-like surface. It is light in weight, tough in texture, easily torn longitudinally, odorless, and has a slight areca nut aroma.
