【Botanical Origin】
The dried whole plant of Viola yedoensis Mak. and Viola spp. in the Violaceae family.
【Characteristics】
The rhizome is cylindrical, about 5-7mm long and 2-3mm in diameter, with many nodes and an uneven surface. Fibrous roots grow at the base of the rhizome and are thin and cylindrical. It is brittle and easily broken. The leaves are clustered on the rhizome, with slender petioles. The leaves are curled, yellowish-brown or dark green, slightly hairy, brittle and easily broken. The flowers are purple, and the flower stem is thin and soft, with a mature capsule at the apex, yellowish-green, sometimes splitting like a “丁” (T-shape), containing several brown seeds. It has a weak odor, a bitter and astringent taste, and is slightly sticky.
