 【Botanical Origin】

Rhizome of Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC. in the Iridaceae family.

 【Characteristics】

The rhizome is irregularly nodular, about 3~10cm long and 1~1.5cm in diameter. The surface is grayish-brown with oblique or twisted annular wrinkles that are very dense. The upper surface has disc-shaped stem scars and annular leaf scars. The lower side and both sides of the rhizome are scattered with numerous residual fibrous roots or fibrous root scars. The fibrous roots are quite tough.
The processed pieces are oblique or thin slices of varying shapes and sizes, about 1mm thick. The edges of the slices are uneven, and traces of fibrous roots can be seen. The cross-section is smooth, light yellowish-white or light yellow, with numerous light-colored granular vascular bundle spots. It is hard in texture, bitter in taste, and slightly spicy.

 【Identification】

The best quality is dry, plump, large, soft, yellow-fleshed, and free of hairs and dirt. If there are white, non-bitter pieces mixed in, remove them, as they may be iris roots.
