[Botanical Origin]
The dried stems and leaves of the Asteraceae plant Artemisia apiacea Hance or Artemisia annua L., and related species in the same genus.
[Characteristics]
The whole plant is about 60~90cm long. The stem is cylindrical with many branches at the upper part. The surface is yellowish-green or brownish-yellow, with longitudinal grooves and ridges. It is light in texture and easily broken. The cross-section has a white, loose pith in the center. The unflowered young branches have bipinnate or tripinnate leaves, which are alternate, dark green, and covered with short hairs. Branches with flower or fruit spikes have sparse or fallen leaves. The remaining leaves are wrinkled and curled, greenish-brown, brittle and easily broken. It often has many small capitulum inflorescences that are yellow-green and arranged in racemes. It has a unique aroma and a slightly bitter taste.
