 【Botanical Origin】

Root of Stellera chamaejasme L. (Thymelaeaceae) or Euphorbia fischeriana Steud.(Euphorbiaceae), or Euphorbia ebracteolata Hayata.

 【Appearance】

Stellera chamaejasme roots are conical to long cylindrical, slightly twisted, 7-15-30cm long, 2-7cm in diameter; the root head retains the residual base of the aboveground stem; the outer surface is brown to brownish-brown, with longitudinal wrinkles and transverse, slender lenticels, and sometimes residual fine roots. After the cork layer peels off, soft fibers are exposed. Light in weight, tough in texture, not easy to break, the central xylem of the fracture surface is yellowish-white, and the outer phloem is white, fibrous. It has a slight odor, and a slightly sweet, slightly bitter, and spicy taste.

White Lang Du (Wolfsbane) is the dried root of Euphorbia fischeriana or Euphorbia ebracteolata Hayata, all cut into approximately circular pieces. The diameter is about 4-7cm, the thickness is 0.5-3cm, and occasionally up to 7cm. The surface is yellowish-brown or light brown. The cork layer is in overlapping flakes and is easy to peel off. The cut surface is uneven, with obvious concentric rings of alternating dark brown and yellowish-white colors, and occasionally the ring patterns are not obvious. It is light in weight, easy to break, and the cut surface is powdery, with stickiness when wet with water, and viscous filaments can be seen when torn apart. It has a slight odor, a sweet taste, and an irritating spicy taste. The root properties of Euphorbia ebracteolata are similar to the above species, but the color of the concentric rings on the cut surface is lighter and not as obvious as that of Euphorbia fischeriana. It is not noticeably sticky when wet with water.

The Lang Du (Wolfsbane) recorded in the Materia Medica is Stellera chamaejasme, so this should be the authentic product, but most areas currently use white Lang Du (Wolfsbane), which is Euphorbia fischeriana.
