【Formula Explanation】

In this formula, Fang Feng, Qiang Huo, and Jing Jie are used to dispel wind and release the exterior. Bo He, Man Jing Zi, and Ju Hua disperse wind, clear heat, and brighten the eyes. Huang Lian, Huang Qin, and Zhi Zi clear heat, dry dampness, resolve toxins, and reduce swelling. Lian Qiao clears heat and resolves toxins. Ji Li and Jue Ming Zi pacify the liver, subdue yang, dispel wind, and brighten the eyes. Shi Gao clears heat and drains fire. The liver opens into the eyes, so Angelica, Sheng Di, Chi Shao, and Chuan Xiong are used to nourish blood, activate blood, soothe the liver, and soften the liver, allowing the eyes to be nourished and less susceptible to external evil invasions. Jie Geng guides the herbs upward, and Gan Cao harmonizes the herbs. Together, these herbs disperse wind-heat, resolve toxins, dry dampness, reduce swelling, stop pain, nourish blood, soothe the liver, clear the liver, and brighten the eyes, leading to the gradual healing of eye diseases.

Redness and swelling of the eyes caused by all types of wind-heat.

Scleritis, interstitial keratitis, episcleritis, glaucoma.

 【Mnemonic】

Blood tonifying and middle harmonizing: Gui Cao; Exterior releasing: Fang Qiang Jing Ju Man Bo; Heat clearing: Qin Lian Sheng Di Qiao; Blood activating, phlegm transforming, and liver pacifying: Xiong Chi Shao Geng Ji Jue Ming.

 【Modifications】

(1) If pain is unbearable, add light round Sichuan Wu Tou (fire-fried); if pain is not severe, do not use. (2) If there are corneal opacities, add Ji Li and Mu Ze, and remove Shao Yao. (3) If wind-heat and liver fire are strong, add Dan Cao and Chai Hu, and remove Bo He. (4) If bowel movements are constipated, add Da Huang, Chuan Xiong, and Jie Geng.
