【Formula Principles】

According to *Yi Fang*: Medicines targeting the Foot Taiyang and Hand/Foot Taiyin channels. (1) Notopterygium Root (Qiang Huo) and Large-leaf Gentian Root (Qin Jiao): Release the exterior and disperse wind, allowing dampness to be overcome by wind, and pathogens to exit through sweat, thereby rising to the upper body. (2) Areca Peel (Da Fu Pi), Poria Peel (Fu Ling Pi), and Ginger Peel (Jiang Pi): Pungent for dispersion and bland for percolation, thus promoting water movement in the skin. (3) Pokeberry Root (Shang Lu), Areca Seed (Bin Lang), Prickly Ash Seed (Jiao Mu), and Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiao Dou): Relieve distension and attack hardened masses, thus promoting water movement within the abdomen. (4) Akebia Stem (Mu Tong): Drains water from the Heart and Lungs, allowing it to reach the small intestine. (5) Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie): Drains water from the Spleen and Kidneys, connecting to the bladder. (6) When the entire body is swollen externally, and there is thirst and constipation internally, it indicates pathology affecting both upper and lower, exterior and interior. (7) By dispersing its momentum in all directions, both upper and lower, internal and external, it resembles the legendary Yu the Great dredging rivers and excavating canals. According to *Shan Bu*: Uses Pokeberry Root (Shang Lu) as the sovereign herb, specifically to move various waters. Assisted by Notopterygium Root (Qiang Huo), Large-leaf Gentian Root (Qin Jiao), Areca Peel (Da Fu Pi), Poria Peel (Fu Ling Pi), and Ginger Peel (Jiang Pi), to move water in the exterior, dispersing it through the skin; assisted by Areca Seed (Bin Lang), Adzuki Bean (Chi Dou), Prickly Ash Seed (Jiao Mu), Alisma Rhizome (Ze Xie), and Akebia Stem (Mu Tong), to move water in the interior, exiting through urine and stool. According to *Shan Bu*: Whole-body edema, gasping for breath and thirst, constipation and difficult urination.
