【Prescription Analysis】

“Lectures on Chinese Patent Medicines”: This is a famous formula for traumatic injuries. In the formula, Draconis Sanguis and Safflower invigorate blood and remove stasis; Frankincense and Myrrh promote Qi circulation, remove stasis, reduce swelling, and relieve pain; Catechu clears heat and stops bleeding; Cinnabar calms the heart and pacifies the spirit; Musk and Borneol are pungent and scattered, good at promoting Qi and blood circulation and relieving pain. Combined, they invigorate blood, disperse stasis, and stop pain and bleeding. However, the pungent and scattered nature of the ingredients, which promote Qi circulation and remove stasis, can consume Qi and cause miscarriage, so pregnant women should avoid it.

 【Functions】

Invigorate blood to remove stasis, reduce swelling and relieve pain, stop bleeding.

 【Indications】

Traumatic injuries, bruises and swelling pain due to fractured tendons and bones, lumbar sprains, bone and muscle pain, blood stasis accumulation. Also for knife wounds with bleeding; and all kinds of unknown swellings, burns, scalds, etc.

 【Applications】

Soft tissue injuries, sprains, lacerations, dislocations, fractures, boils, carbuncles, erysipelas, folliculitis, and other infectious suppurative diseases, burns and scalds of deep second degree or less.

 【Contraindications】

(1) This formula has a strong circulating action, consumes Qi, and can cause miscarriage, so it should not be taken excessively; pregnant women should avoid it. (2) Qi Li San has a strong medicinal property. The oral dosage should not be too large. Generally, it is taken with powder and seven li powder mixed and drunk, and it is named after this. (3) The formula contains Cinnabar, which has a sedative effect and can assist in relieving pain. However, its main component is mercury sulfide. When used with reducing substances (such as sodium bromide, potassium iodide, ferrous sulfate, nitrite, etc.), it can react chemically to produce toxic mercuric bromide and mercuric iodide, or reduce mercury salts to metallic mercury, causing mercury poisoning or drug-induced enteritis. Therefore, these two types of drugs should not be taken simultaneously.
