[Formula Analysis]
From “The Study of Formulas” (Tang Dynasty): Rhinoceros horn clears the heart, cools blood, and detoxifies; Antelope horn cools the liver, extinguishes wind, and stops spasms. These two herbs work together as medicines for heat that has transferred into the heart and liver channels; Musk is acrid, warm, and aromatic, opening the orifices and reviving the spirit. Combined with rhinoceros horn and antelope horn, it achieves clearing the heart and cooling the liver, opening the orifices and extinguishing wind; Raw gypsum, gypsum fibrosum, and talcum are greatly cold, clearing heat; Scrophularia and Cimicifuga clear heat and detoxify; Natron and Nitre clear heat and disperse stagnation, all serving as the primary herbs in the formula. Costus root and Agarwood regulate qi and open the orifices. Combined with musk, they enhance the action of opening the orifices and reviving the spirit; 砂/’>Cinnabar clears the heart and detoxifies, lodestone calms the liver yang, and Realgar calms the heart and spirit. These three herbs work together to heavily鎮(zhen) and calm the spirit, and also strengthen the actions of relieving vexation and stopping spasms, serving as secondary herbs in the formula. Licorice root tonifies qi and the middle, harmonizes the other herbs, and prevents cold and purging herbs from harming the stomach.

Clears heat and detoxifies, calms spasms and opens orifices.
[Indications]
High fever and restlessness due to heat evil invading the pericardium in warm-febrile diseases, leading to coma and delirium, convulsions and spasms, thirst and dry lips, red urine and constipation, and infantile convulsions due to severe heat.
[Syndromes Applicable]
Epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, Japanese encephalitis, toxic dysentery, scarlet fever, and other conditions.
