【Botanical Origin】
This product generally refers to the dried root of Sophora tonkinensis Gagnep (S. subprostrata Chun et T. Chen) of the Fabaceae family, commonly known as Guang Dou Gen.
【Characteristics】
This product presents as a slender or relatively thick cylindrical shape with many root nodules, approximately 30-50 cm in length and 2-5 cm in thickness. The bottom has sparse thin roots. The outer surface is brownish-yellow to brownish-black with longitudinal wrinkles, and the corky layer is easily peeled off. The texture is firm and hard. The fracture surface is flat, and the wood part is yellow.
The processed slices are irregular in shape, with a diameter of 0.5-2 cm and a thickness of 0.3 mm. The surface is tan, the texture is hard and firm, and the cross-section has a light brown outer ring, resembling wax, with a yellow-white pith in the middle, or slightly visible cracks. It is odorless, tastes bitter, and has a slight bean-like smell.
【Identification】
“Zun Sheng Ba Jian” states: “Shan Dou Gen from Guangzhong is the best.” The best quality is dry, thick and long, even strips, free of mud, and without residual stems and fibrous roots.
