n [Characteristics]n
The dried bark is cylindrical or semi-cylindrical, up to 30cm or more in length, and 1-2mm thick. The outer surface is rough, grayish-green or grayish-brown, with visible grayish-white lichen patches, scattered fine transverse cracks, slight longitudinal wrinkles, and dense punctate or transverse lenticels. The lenticels are round or oblong, reddish-brown. The inner surface is smooth, light brown or light yellow, with fine, dense longitudinal lines. It is hard and brittle, and easily broken.nProcessed pieces are cut into small sections, generally about 5-10mm long; the outer surface is grayish-brown, with visible reddish-brown cracks and lenticels. The cross-section is yellowish-white, with vaguely visible multiple layers of transverse fine lines in the phloem. The fracture is fibrous or layered; it has a slightly fragrant odor, a slightly astringent taste, and a prickly sensation on the tongue when chewed.

No grade distinction, varying thickness. The best quality is dry, tender, and smooth bark with a clean white interior. Moldy black bark is inferior.
