【Botanical Origin】
Bark of Chinese Redbud Cercis chinensis Bunge and Yunnan Redbud Cercis yun-nanensis Hu et Cheng.
【Characteristics】
The dried bark presents as long cylindrical or trough-shaped pieces, all rolled inward, about 6-25cm long, about 3cm wide, and about 3-6mm thick. The outer surface is grayish-brown with wrinkles, and the inner surface is purplish-brown with fine longitudinal textures. It has a firm texture and is not easily broken, with a grayish-red cross-section. When viewed against the light, small bright spots can be seen. It has no odor and a astringent taste.
The Yunnan Redbud presents as cylindrical or block-shaped, with an orange-red or orange-yellow outer epidermis, with transverse stripes, and a dark brown inner surface with longitudinal stripes.
【Identification】
The best quality are those with long strips, thick bark, and firm texture.
