[Formula Rationale]

According to “Fang Ji Xue Tang”: Salvia miltiorrhiza is used in a large dose, five times the amount of the other two herbs, to invigorate blood, remove stasis, and relieve pain without harming qi and blood, making it the primary herb in the formula. Sandalwood and Amomum villosum are secondary herbs used to warm the middle, regulate qi, and relieve pain, as the circulation of blood relies on the promotion of qi.

Invigorates blood and removes stasis, regulates qi and relieves pain.

 [Indications]

Qi stagnation and blood stasis, epigastric and abdominal pain, chest and stomach pain, chest tightness and discomfort, also used for patients with colic.

Chronic gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric neurosis, coronary heart disease angina, chronic hepatitis, etc.

 [Modifications]

(1) For severe pain due to blood stasis, add Curcuma and Frankincense to invigorate blood and relieve pain. (2) For severe pain due to qi stagnation, add Cyperus rotundus and Lindera for regulating qi and relieving pain. (3) For severe cold coagulation, add Evodia lepta to warm the meridians and relieve pain. (4) For severe heat stagnation, add Scutellaria baicalensis to clear heat and relieve pain. (5) For chest tightness and epigastric distention, add Bupleurum, Aurantium, Achyranthes bidentata, and raw Glycyrrhiza uralensis.
