【Analysis of the Formula】

From “Lectures on the Study of Chinese Patent Medicines”: This is a famous formula for traumatology. In the formula, Dragon’s Blood and Safflower remove blood stasis and promote blood circulation; Frankincense and Myrrh promote the circulation of Qi and blood, reduce swelling, and relieve pain; Catechu clears heat and stops bleeding; Cinnabar calms the heart and spirit; Moschus and Borneol are pungent and penetrating, good at promoting the circulation of Qi and blood and relieving pain. Combined, they promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis, stop pain and bleeding. However, the pungent and penetrating herbs in the formula can consume Qi and cause miscarriage, so pregnant women should not take it.

 【Functions】

Promotes blood circulation and removes blood stasis, reduces swelling and relieves pain, stops bleeding.

 【Indications】

Traumatic injuries, bruises and swelling due to fractured bones, sprains, muscle strains, pain in the tendons and bones, coagulation of blood stasis. Also for bleeding from knife wounds; and for all types of unexplained swellings, burns, scalds, etc.

 【Applications】

Soft tissue injuries, sprains, cuts, dislocations, fractures, boils, carbuncles, erysipelas, folliculitis and other infectious suppurative diseases, second-degree burns and scalds within depth, etc.

 【Contraindications】

(1) The herbs in this formula are penetrating and can consume Qi and cause miscarriage, so do not take them in large doses; pregnant women should not take it. (2) Qilisan is a strong medicine, and the oral dose should not be too large. Generally, it is taken with warm water. This is how it got its name. (3) The formula contains cinnabar, which has a sedative effect and can assist in pain relief. However, its main component is mercury sulfide. When used with reducing substances (such as sodium bromide, potassium iodide, ferrous sulfate, nitrites, etc.), it can react chemically to produce toxic mercury bromide and mercury iodide, or reduce mercury salts to metallic mercury, causing mercury poisoning or drug-induced enteritis. Therefore, these two types of drugs should not be taken simultaneously.
