 【Botanical Origin】

The dried fruit of Forsythia suspense Vahl. of the Oleaceae family. Forsythia Fruit (Lian Qiao)

 【Characteristics】

It is long ovoid, narrowly pointed at both ends. The entire length is about 1~2.5 cm, and the width is about 0.5~1 cm. The pericarp and outer surface are yellowish-brown, with irregular raised fine longitudinal striations and raised spots. There is a clear longitudinal groove on each side. “Qing Qiao” (green forsythia fruit) is mostly uncracked, greenish-brown with fewer raised grayish-white small spots. There are many seeds, slender, with a curved end on one side, yellowish-green. “Lao Qiao” (old forsythia fruit) splits from the tip or splits into two halves. The surface is yellowish-brown, the seeds are brown, and most have fallen off. It has a slightly fragrant odor and a bitter taste.

Qing Qiao (green forsythia fruit) is considered superior if it is green, intact, uncracked, and free of impurities. Lao Qiao (old forsythia fruit) is considered superior if it is yellow, thick-shelled, seedless, and pure.
