【Analysis】

“Yi Fang”: This formula contains herbs for the Hand and Foot Yangming channels. (1) Cypress Twig and Leaf: Nourishes Yin and dries Dampness, excels at clearing the Blood division. (2) Sophora Japonica Flower: Drains Liver heat and can cool the Large Intestine. (3) Schizonepetae Herba: Disperses stasis and searches for Wind. (4) Aurantii Fructus Immodus: Broadens the intestines and facilitates Qi.

 【Functions】

Clears intestinal heat, disperses Wind, moves Qi, and stops bleeding.

 【Indications】

Intestinal bleeding due to intestinal wind or toxins, bleeding before or after stools, blood in the stool, bleeding hemorrhoids, with bright red or dark blood. “Yi Fang”: Intestinal wind, toxins causing bleeding.

 【Clinical Applications】

Internal hemorrhoidal bleeding.

 【Contraindications】

(1) The herbs are cold in nature and should not be taken for prolonged periods. (2) This formula treats bleeding caused by blood heat running amok. If bleeding has been prolonged and shows signs of Qi deficiency or Yin deficiency, this formula is not suitable. (3) This formula is effective for bleeding from simple mechanical damage in the lower large intestine. However, for prolonged, unresolved bleeding due to complex causes, this formula only treats the symptoms, not the root cause. Therefore, investigate the cause and seek a radical cure.

 【Modifications】

(1) If the large intestine is hot and damp, add Coptidis Rhizoma and Phellodendri Cortex to clear the damp-heat from the intestines. (2) If the bleeding is heavy, add Sanguisorbae Radix et Rhizoma to enhance the effect of clearing heat and stopping bleeding. (3) If the bleeding has been prolonged and is due to blood deficiency, add Angelicae Sinensis Radix and prepared Rehmannia root to replenish blood. (4) Remove Cypress Twig and Leaf and Aurantii Fructus Immodus from this formula, and add Angelicae Sinensis Radix, prepared Rehmannia root, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, and Cimicifugae Rhizoma. This becomes Huai Hua San from “Lan Shi Mi Cang”, which treats intestinal bleeding and bleeding due to damp toxins. (5) Remove Cypress Twig and Leaf and Aurantii Fructus Immodus from this formula, and add Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride. This becomes Huai Hua San from “Jie Gu Jia Zhen”, which treats blood dysentery.
