【Botanical Origin】
It is the root bark or trunk bark of Melia azedarach L. or Melia toosendan Sieb et Zucc., both of the Meliaceae family.
【Characteristics】
The old bark of the trunk and branches is in irregular, elongated pieces or trough-shaped rolls, 15-70cm long, 3-7cm wide, and 3-5mm thick. The outer surface is brownish-brown, rough, with broad longitudinal cracks and fine transverse rows of lines, and reddish-brown oval, transverse lenticels. The surface of the young bark is brownish-purple, smooth, and has a waxy layer. The inner surface is yellowish-white, with torn fibrous thin layers attached. The root bark is in curved block pieces, the outer surface is rough, and no lenticels are seen. It is tough, and the fractured surface is fibrous, and the fibrous layer can be peeled off in pieces. It has a slight odor and a bitter taste.
