【Explanation of Formula】
“Yi Fang”: (1) Di Gu Pi, Huang Lian, Zhi Mu: Bitter and cold, they can remove the heat from the Yin division and pacify it internally. (2) Chai Hu, Qing Hao, Qin Jiao: Acrid and cold, they can remove the heat from the Liver and Gallbladder and dissipate it externally. (3) Bie Jia: Belonging to Yin and a bone-shell, it can guide the other herbs into the bones and nourish Yin. (4) Gan Cao: Sweet and neutral, it can harmonize the other herbs and reduce steaming bone heat.
【Function】
Clears Yin deficiency steaming bone heat.
【Indications】
Yin deficiency steaming bone heat or low-grade fever that persists for a long time, emaciation, red lips, red complexion, red tongue with little coating, and a fine, rapid pulse. “Yi Fang”: Treats steaming bone heat and consumptive fever.
【Syndromes】
Tuberculosis, renal tuberculosis, infantile summer fever, postpartum fever, and other fevers of unknown origin.
【Mnemonic】
Please Auntie — Auntie Huanglian often picks green peppers to stir-fry turtle shell (Gu Mu Lian Chai Qing Jiao Cao Bie Jia).
【Modifications】
(1) If there is blood deficiency, add Dang Gui, Bai Shao, and Sheng Di to nourish blood. (2) If there is cough without phlegm, add E Jiao, Mai Men Dong, and Wu Wei Zi to nourish Yin, moisten the lungs, and stop cough. (3) If there is cough with phlegm, add Xing Ren and Bei Mu to clear heat and resolve phlegm. (4) If there is high fever, add Shi Gao and Dan Pi to clear heat. (5) If there are loose stools and poor appetite, remove Qin Jiao, Huang Lian, and Zhi Mu, and add Bian Dou and Shan Yao to strengthen the spleen and nourish Yin. (6) If there is a low voice, shortness of breath, laziness to speak, and pale complexion, combine with Huang Qi to tonify Qi and reduce fever. (7) If there is afternoon steaming bone heat, red malar flush, night sweats, emaciation, shortness of breath, and a red tongue with little coating, combine with Huang Qi and Mu Li to tonify Qi and harmonize Yin. (8) If Yin deficiency is severe, add Xuan Shen, He Shou Wu, and Shan Yu Rou to nourish Yin essence.
