【Botanical Origin】
It is the root of Aristolochia delbilis Sieb. Et Zucc. and Aristolochia contorta Bge., both belonging to the Aristolochiaceae family.
【Characteristics】
It is cylindrical or flattened-cylindrical, slightly curved, 5-15cm long, and 0.5-1.5cm in diameter; the surface is yellowish-brown, with wrinkles and fine root scars. There are two types, thick and thin. The thicker ones are often broken, with scars of long and fine roots. It is brittle and easily broken, with powder flying out when broken. The fracture surface is uneven, the outer ring is light yellow, and there is a layer of cambium ring that is clearly visible. The wood rays are milky white, fan-shaped or inverted triangular, separating the woody part into several strips, with radial textures of alternating white and yellowish-brown. The xylem is light yellow, with visible small pore-like vessels (with small holes). It has a fragrant odor, and the taste is initially bitter and then numbing and spicy.
