[Formula Meaning]

The ingredients are all for cooling blood and stopping bleeding. Herba seu radix Notopterygii, Herba seu radix Notopterygii, Folium Nelumbinis, Radix Rubiae, Folium Platycladi, and Rhizoma Imperatae function to cool blood and stop bleeding; Cortex Trachycarpi is astringent and stops bleeding; Fructus Gardeniae can clear liver fire, cool blood, and stop bleeding; Radix et Rhizoma Rhei can guide heat downward to aid in stopping bleeding; Cortex Moutan combined with Radix et Rhizoma Rhei cools blood and disperses stasis. Toasting all ingredients to charcoal can enhance their astringent and hemostatic properties. “Fang Ji Xue Tang”: Herba seu radix Notopterygii, Herba seu radix Notopterygii, Folium Nelumbinis, Radix Rubiae, Folium Platycladi, Rhizoma Imperatae, etc., are the main herbs for cooling blood and stopping bleeding, aiming to suppress the heat and prevent blood from flowing erratically, thus stopping bleeding. Because excessive heat and upward surging of Qi fire cause bleeding, Fructus Gardeniae is used to clear heat and purge fire, and Radix et Rhizoma Rhei guides heat downward, to counteract the upward surging and relieve bleeding from the upper part of the body, allowing Qi to descend and bleeding to stop. These are secondary herbs in the formula, used to clear liver fire. Cortex Moutan cools blood and stops bleeding without leaving stasis, and Cortex Trachycarpi is astringent and stops bleeding. These are auxiliary herbs.
