 【Botanical Origin】

The dried woody branch nodes of the Chinese Red Pine Pinus tabulaeformis Carr. or Masson’s Pine Pinus massoniana Lamb. (Pinaceae).

 【Characteristics】

Dried Song Jie (Pine Knot) appears as irregular lumps or slices, varying in size and thickness, generally 5-10 cm long, with the width and thickness each being about half the length. A few have a phellem layer on the surface, with a yellowish-brown surface and deep longitudinal cracks. The transverse section is rough, with a light brown center and straight or slightly curved striated texture. The edges are dark brown and oily. It is hard in texture, not easy to break, and the fracture surface is thorny. It has the aroma of Song Jie (Pine Knot) oil and a slightly bitter taste.
The processed pieces are thin slices cut down, 3 cm long, 2 cm wide, and 1-2 mm thick, or transverse round slices. The surface is yellowish-brown with fine, smooth lines and the aroma of Song Jie (Pine Knot) oil.

The best quality is large, reddish-brown in color, and sufficiently oily, with oil oozing out when burned.
