 【Botanical Origin】

Dried fleshy stem of Cynomorium coccineum L. of the Cynomoriaceae family.

 【Characteristics】

It is flattened cylindrical, slightly curved, 8~21㎝ long, and 2~5㎝ in diameter. The surface is reddish-brown to dark brown, wrinkled and uneven, forming coarse longitudinal structures or irregular depressions. Triangular scales can sometimes be seen. It is firm in texture and not easily broken. The cross-section is slightly granular, brown and moist. It has a slightly fragrant odor and a slightly bitter and astringent taste.
The sliced form consists of thin transverse slices of varying shapes with irregular and uneven edges. The cut surface is brown, and the central part is sometimes dark brown with numerous small yellow triangular spots (vascular bundle groups). It has a unique odor and a slightly sweet taste.

The best quality is dry, plump and long, firm in texture, purplish-red or reddish-black brown in color, oily in cross-section, and without visible veins.
