【Formula Explanation】
From “Formulary Studies”: The principle of this formula is to “replenish the source of fire to cultivate the primordial Yang of the right kidney”. To cultivate and tonify the primordial Yang in the kidney, one must “seek Yang within Yin”, meaning to combine Yin-nourishing and essence-replenishing ingredients with Yang-tonifying ones to achieve the effect of cultivating primordial Yang. In the formula, Cinnamon Bark, Aconite Root, combined with the ‘fleshy and affectionate’ (rich in essence) Deer Antler Gelatin, all warm and tonify Kidney Yang, replenish essence and nourish marrow. Prepared Rehmannia Root, Cornus Fruit, Chinese Yam, Dodder Seed, Goji Berry, and Eucommia Bark are all for nourishing Yin and benefiting the Kidney, nourishing Liver and tonifying Spleen. Additionally, Chinese Angelica Root nourishes blood and liver. The combination of all these herbs collectively warms Yang and benefits the Kidney, replenishes essence and nourishes blood, thereby achieving the effect of cultivating the primordial Yang in the kidney.
【Modifications】
(1) If there is Yang deficiency with seminal emission, turbid discharge, or loose stools, add Psoralea Fruit to tonify the Kidney, consolidate essence, and stop diarrhea.
(2) If accompanied by diarrhea occurring before dawn (cock-crow diarrhea), add Schisandra Fruit and Nutmeg to astringe the intestines and stop diarrhea.
(3) If accompanied by poor appetite or nausea with acid regurgitation, add dried ginger 3-4 liang (stir-fried until yellowish) to warm the middle jiao and dispel cold.
(4) If accompanied by abdominal pain, add Evodia Fruit 2 liang (soaked in hot water for half a day, then stir-fried) to dispel cold and stop pain.
(5) If there is impotence, add Morinda Root and Cistanche to tonify the Kidney and strengthen Yang.
(6) If there is soreness in the lower back and knees, add Walnut Kernel to tonify the Kidney, assist Yang, and strengthen the lower back and knees.
(7) If Deer Antler Gelatin, Dodder Seed, and Chinese Angelica Root are removed from this formula, and Licorice Root is added, it becomes You Gui Yin (Right-Restoring Decoction) from “Jing Yue Quan Shu”. Its functions are to warm the Kidney and replenish essence, primarily treating qi deficiency and mental fatigue, abdominal pain and lower back soreness, cold limbs and thready pulse, pale tongue with white coating, or yin exuberance blocking yang, exhibiting true cold with false heat.
(8) If there is Yang deficiency and Qi deficiency, Ginseng must be added as the chief herb, either 2-3 liang or 5-6 liang, adjusted according to the individual’s deficiency or excess.
