【Formula Principles】
《Shan Bu》: Gypsum Fibrosum treats fire-heat in the Triple Jiao, its primary efficacy lies in clearing the Lung and dispelling fire from the Lung, hence it is used as the monarch (chief) herb. Anemarrhena Rhizome also drains heart fire from the Lung and nourishes the source of water (Yin). Ginseng Root generates fluids and benefits the injured Qi, thus serving as the minister (assistant) herb. Japonica Rice and Licorice Root nourish the Earth element to support the Metal element, acting as assistants.
【Functions】
Benefits Qi, clears heat and drains fire, generates fluids.
【Applications】
(1) Taiyang disease, after diaphoresis, if heat persists, accompanied by vexation, thirst, and desire for water. (2) Exogenous cold-induced disease where the exterior syndrome has resolved, leading to Yangming meridian syndrome with intense internal heat, impairment of both fluids and Qi, unremitting vexation and thirst, and a surging, large pulse. (3) Heatstroke in summer, characterized by fever, thirst, sweating, and aversion to cold. (4) Fire-heat damaging the Lung, leading to upper-jiao wasting syndrome (diabetes insipidus-like symptoms) with excessive drinking. 《Shan Bu》: Sunstroke with sweating, aversion to cold, fever, and thirst is classified as Ye (a form of heatstroke).
【Modern Indications】
Japanese encephalitis, heatstroke, diabetes, high fever, epidemic hemorrhagic fever.
【Contraindications】
(1) This formula should only be taken between Lidong (Start of Summer) and Liqiu (Start of Autumn). It should not be taken after Liqiu. (2) In the first, second, and third lunar months (when it is still cold), it should not be administered, as doing so may cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. (3) It should not be administered to patients with blood deficiency or blood loss, as it may lead to abdominal pain and diarrhea. (4) Avoid Seaweed and Napa Cabbage.
