【Formula Explanation】

《Yi Fang》: A formula for the Hand Taiyin (Lung meridian). Prolonged cough due to overstrain indicates Lung deficiency; even if there are heat symptoms, they are all deficiency fire. (1) Hai Zang uses Radix Asteris and Colla Corii Asini as principal (monarch) herbs to protect the Lung. (2) It uses Rhizoma Anemarrhenae and Bulbus Fritillariae as ministerial (minister) herbs to clear fire. (3) Radix Ginseng and Poria are used as assistant (assistant) herbs to support Earth (Spleen/Stomach) to generate Metal (Lung). (4) Honey-fried Radix Glycyrrhizae and Radix Platycodonis are used as guiding (envoy) herbs to carry the medicine upwards to the Spleen and Lung. (5) Fructus Schisandrae nourishes the insufficient water of the Kidney, thereby consolidating the scattered Metal of the Lung, which is essential for prolonged cough.

 【Functions】

Tonifies the Lung and relieves cough, clears heat and resolves phlegm.

 【Indications】

External pathogenic heat injuring the Lung, leading to cough, itchy throat with copious phlegm, shortness of breath, chest fullness and costal pain, inability to lie down comfortably, dry throat with cough, spitting phlegm with blood, dull pain in the hypochondriac region, and inability to lie down for long periods. 《Yi Fang》: Cough during pregnancy. 《Shan Bu》 (Supplement and Correction): Persistent cough in pregnancy, leading to restless fetus.

 【Mnemonic】

“吉人敢服二母膠無怨” (Jí Rén Gǎn Fú Èr Mǔ Jiāo Wú Yuàn) is a mnemonic, where: 桔 (Jú) refers to Radix Platycodonis; 人 (Rén) refers to Radix Ginseng; 甘 (Gān) refers to Radix Glycyrrhizae; 茯 (Fú) refers to Poria; 二母 (Èr Mǔ) refers to Rhizoma Anemarrhenae and Bulbus Fritillariae; 膠 (Jiāo) refers to Colla Corii Asini; 五 (Wǔ) refers to Fructus Schisandrae; and 菀 (Wǎn) refers to Radix Asteris.
