【Formula Analysis】
Annotations on Shang Han Lun: Chills and a weak pulse with diarrhea indicates deficiency of yang and predominance of yin. Administer Sini Tang to warm the meridians and assist yang, adding Ginseng to generate body fluids and benefit the blood. Compendium of Cold Diseases: It is not advisable to use ginger for loss of blood, as it can damage yin, nor is it advisable to use Gui and Shao to assist yang in yin deficiency. In this case, with persistent diarrhea and chills after sweating, yang qi is severely depleted. Therefore, Sini Tang is urgently needed to restore yang. The reason for using Ginseng is not only to protect body fluids, but also because yang herbs gain more power when combined with it. If yin herbs are mistakenly used, it will lead to abdominal fullness and loss of appetite, or aggravated diarrhea and vomiting, turning into a collapse of yang. Explanations of the Formulas from Thousand Gold Prescriptions: Directly addressing interior cold requires ginger and aconite to warm the meridians and rescue the cold limbs, and the name of the formula is based on the condition; adding Ginseng to Huoluan aids ginger and aconite in returning yang and making the limbs warm and obedient, and the name is given to reflect its effectiveness. This shares a principle with Dangui Sini Tang with Sheng Jiang and Wu Zhu Yu in assisting yang. Selected Annotations of Ancient Formulas: Sini Jia Ren Shen Tang treats the condition of yin collapse with cessation of diarrhea. When yin collapses, yang qi also departs with it, so it is not appropriate to treat only yin. Dried ginger and Aconite Root are used to warm the meridians and assist yang, while Ginseng and Licorice generate fluids and harmonize yin.
