【Prescription Meaning】

_The Golden Chamber Prescription Meaning_: The “lung distension” treated by this formula is caused by the internal accumulation of phlegm-heat and the subsequent invasion of external wind evil. The external wind evil constrains the exterior, leading to the unsmoothness of lung qi. The internal accumulation of phlegm-heat causes the lungs to lose their regulating function, resulting in upward qi, panting, coughing, a swollen body, and protruding eyes. The treatment should focus on disseminating the lungs, calming panting, clearing heat, and transforming phlegm. In the formula, Ephedra disseminates the lungs and calms panting, releasing external wind evil; the minister ingredient Gypsum Fibrosum clears and purges internal heat; the adjuvant ingredient Pinellia Ternata descends rebellious qi and disperses stagnation, drying and transforming phlegm-dampness; Fresh Ginger with its pungent and dispersing properties, works with Ephedra externally to promote the dissipation of water qi and internally assists Pinellia Ternata in descending rebellious qi and resolving phlegm-drink; Jujube tonifies the spleen and regulates water, and when combined with Fresh Ginger, harmonizes the ying and wei qi; the guide ingredient Licorice harmonizes all the herbs and moderates the dispersing action of Ephedra and the cold nature of Gypsum Fibrosum, allowing for the purging of evil without harming the righteous qi.
