【Botanical Origin】
Dried flower buds and newly opened flowers of Rosa rugosa Thunb., of the Rosaceae family.
【Characteristics】
Slightly hemispherical or irregular clumps, 1.5~2.5㎝ in diameter. Numerous petals, imbricated, mostly wrinkled, brittle in texture. There are five sepals, lanceolate, greenish-brown on the outer surface with fine soft hairs, more on the inner surface, grayish-green. The receptacle is prominent, hemispherical, about 5㎜ in diameter, also greenish-brown on the surface, smooth and hairless. Usually the pedicel has been removed. Light and brittle in texture, strong fragrance, taste slightly bitter and astringent.
【Identification】
“Essentials of Materia Medica”: “The small red flowers that bloom every month, commonly known as monthly roses, are best for medicinal use.” The best quality is dry, red in color, bright and beautiful, with uniform flower heads, buds to be opened, strong fragrance, no insects or mold, and no scattered petals.
