【Formula Explanation】
《Han Dian》: This formula consists of three herbs: Da Huang (Rhubarb), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), and Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome). Da Huang (Rhubarb) not only has a purgative effect but, when used with Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome), also treats inflammation and congestion, and relieves pain. Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) and Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) have a stomach-invigorating effect and treat epigastric fullness; Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome) has a hemostatic effect.
【Functions】
Bitter and cold, drains fire, clears and drains the Triple Burner, dries dampness and drains heat, resolves toxicity, calms the spirit, relieves pain, cools the blood.
【Indications】
Counterflow Qi, flushed face, restlessness, erratic heart qi, blazing internal evil fire, forcing blood to move recklessly, causing vomiting blood, epistaxis, or damp-heat accumulating internally leading to jaundice, chest oppression and vexation; or accumulated heat surging upward causing red, swollen, and painful eyes, canker sores; or surgical sores with vexation and heat in the heart and chest, and constipation. All illnesses belonging to excess patterns, damp-heat jaundice, vexation and heat fullness in the chest, yellow and greasy tongue coating, forceful and replete pulse.
【Indications】
Used for cerebral congestion, cerebral hemorrhage, hemoptysis, hematemesis, epistaxis, upper gastrointestinal bleeding, acute pulmonary hemorrhage, hemorrhagic diseases, uterine bleeding, hemorrhoidal bleeding and other disorders. Acute conjunctivitis (belonging to the evil fire disturbing upward), habitual constipation, bacillary dysentery, skin diseases, purulent skin infections, acne, hypertension, neurosis, mental illness, insomnia, gastric ulcer, gastritis, menopausal disorders, arteriosclerosis, prevention and post-care of cerebral hemorrhage, hemorrhoids, hemorrhoidal bleeding, acute pulmonary hemorrhage, acne.
【Mnemonic】
The three Huang (yellow) uncles decided to stay and serve in the Logistics Command (Lian Qin = Huang Lian, Huang Qin).
【Pharmacology】
Has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, lipid-lowering, and purgative effects. Normal rats taking this formula in tablet form can significantly inhibit the increase in serum cholesterol caused by a high-cholesterol diet.
