[Botanical Origin]

Dried shell of Haliotis diversicolor Reeve (also known as Motley Abalone), Haliotis gigantea discus Reeve, Haliotis discus Hannai Ino, or Haliotis ovina Gmelin (Taiwan Shi Jue Ming (Abalone Shell)).

[Characteristics]

The main characteristics of Haliotis diversicolor, Haliotis discus, and Haliotis ovina are: (1) Haliotis diversicolor is long oval, dark red on the surface, with many spiral ribs and fine growth lines. From the top of the spiral part, there are more than 20 wart-like protrusions, with 6 to 9 openings at the end, the openings are flush with the shell, the shell is thicker and harder, the inner surface has a pearl-like luster, and the taste is slightly salty. (2) Haliotis discus is long oval, slightly longer than the previous species, grayish-brown, with many rough wrinkles, and has attached moss and other organisms. The end has 4 to 5 openings protruding from the shell surface, the shell is thinner and looser, and the inner surface has a pearl-like luster. (3) Haliotis ovina has a nearly round shell, grayish-yellow to grayish-brown, some with attached moss and other organisms, with 4 to 5 openings, the openings are flush with the shell, the inner surface of the shell has a pearl-like luster, and the texture is hard. (4) The three newly imported Shi Jue Ming (Abalone Shell) have different shapes and properties. The ear abalone shell is shaped like an “ear”; the Australian abalone has a larger shell, both have a pearl-like luster; the white abalone has a silvery-white luster on the inside.
The shell is hard, not easy to break, the fracture surface is sharp, the surface is rough and uneven (some are more delicate), the growth lines are obvious, dark greenish-brown or grayish-brown, and often parasitic moss-like organisms are attached, looking like rocks. Because the inner surface of the shell has a pearl layer, it has iridescent luster, the outer lip is thin, and the inner lip is thick and has a sheet-like covering edge, flesh-colored.
Calcined Shi Jue Ming (Abalone Shell): The texture is loose and brittle and easily broken, usually broken into irregular small pieces, grayish-black, with some pearl luster still on the inner surface. This product has no odor.
