[Botanical Origin]
The dried, mature fruit of Alpinia oxyphylla Miq. of the Zingiberaceae family.
[Characteristics]
Spindle-shaped or oval, 1.5-2cm long and 1-1.2cm in diameter. The outer skin is reddish-brown to grayish-brown, with 13-18 longitudinal discontinuous raised lines. The skin is thin and slightly tough, adhering closely to the seeds. The seeds are clustered together, divided into 3 chambers, separated by thin membranes, each chamber containing 6-11 seeds. The seeds are irregularly flattened and round, slightly blunt-edged, about 3mm in diameter and 1.5mm thick, grayish-brown on the surface. The hilum is located in the center of the ventral side, and there is a grooved seed ridge from the hilum to the chalazal end on the dorsal side. The inside is white after breaking open. It has a special odor and a pungent, slightly bitter taste.
