【Formula Actions】

According to Han Dian: Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) in the formula opens up blood vessels, smooths stagnant blood, and treats abdominal pain. Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Tuber) unblocks the meridians and calms heart and abdominal pain, alleviating neurotic pain. Mu Li (Oyster Shell) removes rib pain, treats old phlegm, and neutralizes acidity. Suo Sha (Astragalus propinquus, likely a typo for a herb with similar function to smooth Qi) regulates Qi and stops pain. Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel Fruit) is a warming agent, warming the stomach and removing stomach cold pain. Liang Jiang (Galangal Rhizome) descends Qi and warms the middle, with the action of warming the stomach, regulating Qi, and calming neurotic pain.

 【Functions】

Warms the middle, disperses cold, regulates Qi, stops bleeding, dispels stagnation, and alleviates pain.

 【Indications】

(1) Chronic or recent epigastric pain, spleen pain, vomiting of sour fluids, retention of cold pathogens leading to accumulation and stagnation, fullness and distension of the chest and diaphragm, piercing pain in the abdomen and ribs, nausea and vomiting, sallow complexion, thinness, and fatigue of the limbs. (2) Women with stabbing pain due to blood and Qi stagnation, with heavy and pressing pain in the lower abdomen extending to the waist. (3) This formula for stabbing pain due to blood and Qi stagnation is particularly effective for spasmodic pain with slight deficiency signs and slow progression.

 【Clinical Applications】

Nervous stomach pain, gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, hyperacidity, gastroptosis, chronic gastritis, stomach tumors, pyloric stenosis, menstrual pain, pregnancy vomiting, anemia, morning sickness. These conditions are characterized by chronic, persistent mild or dull pain in the upper abdomen. The ancient term “stabbing pain of blood and Qi” refers to these conditions combined with neurosis and gastric stasis.

 【Contraindications】

Contraindicated for conditions of excess heat.

 【Mnemonic】

Suo (Yan Hu Suo), Mu Li, Gan Jiang, (Gan Cao), Hui Xiang, Gui Zhi, Liang Jiang; has the effect of aromatic, strengthening the stomach, calming the middle.
