[Analysis of Formula]
According to “Han Dian”: Phlegm is categorized into wind phlegm, warm phlegm, dry phlegm, heat phlegm, cold phlegm, qi phlegm, food phlegm, alcohol phlegm, stagnant phlegm, fright phlegm, and so on. This formula is applicable to all types of phlegm except cold phlegm, with a particular emphasis on dry phlegm. This formula evolved from the original “Xiao Xian Xiong Tang” and aims to clear the heat in the liver and stomach, moisten dry phlegm, and remove stagnation of food and drink. Fructus Gardeniae and Coptis Chinensis act as heat-clearing and anti-inflammatory agents, capable of clearing liver heat. Angelica Sinensis and Licorice can moisten the liver, promote blood circulation, and clear heat from the chest and stomach. Fructus Trichosanthis and Fritillaria are phlegm-resolving agents, which, along with bamboo sap and ginger juice, can moisten sticky phlegm and open up stagnation in the chest. Citrus Peel, Platycodon Grandiflorum, <a href='https://whatsintcm.com/dt_articles/Amomumvillosum/’>Amomumvillosum, and VladimiriaRoot, among others, open up qi in the chest and epigastrium, disperse stagnation of phlegm and fluid, moisten congealed phlegm, and clear heat from the liver and stomach.
[Functions]
Clears heat, resolves phlegm, regulates qi, and stops cough.
[Efficacy]
Dry phlegm generated due to heat in the stomach and stagnation of food. Phlegm congeals and cannot be expectorated. Coughing causes stabbing pain in the chest. Lying down causes chest distress and inability to turn over. Or, phlegm congeals, causing chest fullness, distention, alternating chills and fever, and rapid breathing. Also used for phlegm obscuring the mind, leading to inability to speak.
[Indications]
Acute bronchitis, pneumonia, pleurisy, intercostal neuralgia, asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, emphysema, tuberculosis, cerebral hemorrhage, cough in smokers.
[Mnemonic]
[Regulating Qi, Resolving Phlegm and Stopping Cough]: Xiang, Zhi, Chen, Lou, Bei, Jie. [Clearing Heat, Releasing Exterior, Transforming Dampness]: Zhi, Qin, Jiang, Sha. [Tonifying Blood and Spleen]: Gui, Cao, Ling. Imagine wanting to hug and hold Baby Jill, but one person’s琴 (Qin – referring to Platycodon) is too short, so you go home and argue about wanting an old wind chime.
[Modifications]
(1) For phlegm obscuring the mind and inability to speak, add Rhodiola Crenulata (Shi Chang Pu) and remove VladimiriaRoot (Mu Xiang); (2) For asthma, add Cortex Mori (Sang Bai Pi) and Semen Pruni (Su Zi).
