【Formula Rationale】

The “Formulas of Tang Dynasty” states: Sichuan Pepper is pungent and warm, it tonifies the spleen and kidney, secures the essence and qi, and constricts the urination, serving as the main herb in the formula. Lindera is pungent and warm, it regulates qi and dispels cold, warms and disperses cold qi in the bladder and kidney, and stops frequent urination, serving as the secondary herb in the formula. Chinese Yam is used as an assistant herb to strengthen the spleen, tonify qi, and benefit the kidney, securing the essence and qi.

 【Functions】

Warms the kidney and dispels cold, astringes urination.

 【Indications】

Deficiency cold of the lower yuan, frequent urination, as well as symptoms in children such as nocturnal enuresis, frequent urination, and excessive salivation.

 【Syndromes】

Frequent urination, enuresis.

 【Mnemonic】

Traveling to Wu Shan (Lindera, Chinese Yam) is beneficial for your health, it can shrink the spring (stop frequent urination). (Wu Shan Yi Zhi, Suo Quan).

 【Modifications】

(1) For severe frequent urination or enuresis, add Mantis Egg Case, Dodder Seed, Goji Berry, Raspberry, Schisandra, etc., to tonify the kidney and astringe. (2) For children with enuresis or bedwetting at night, remove Chinese Yam from this formula and add Raspberry, stir-fried Chicken Gizzard, calcined Dragon Bone, stir-fried White Peony Root, Cornus officinalis, Alisma to tonify the kidney and astringe. (3) For those with qi deficiency, add Astragalus, Atractylodes Macrocephala to tonify qi and strengthen the spleen. (4) For those with yin deficiency, add raw Rehmannia, White Peony Root to nourish yin and blood. (5) For those with yang deficiency, add Aconite to tonify kidney yang. (6) For those with damp-heat, add Plantain Seed, Alisma, Phellodendron to clear heat and resolve dampness.
