[Formula Meaning]

From “Yi Fang”: This formula is for the hand and foot Yang Ming meridians. (1) Prolapse of the rectum is due to deficiency cold, thus, Ginseng, Atractylodes, and Licorice are used to tonify the deficiency. (2) Cinnamon and Nutmeg: to dispel the cold. (3) Costus: to regulate Qi. (4) Angelica: to moisten and harmonize blood. (5) Peony Root: to astringe with its sourness. (6) Chebula Fruit and Poppy Husk: to astringe and stop the prolapse.

 [Functions]

Astringes the intestines and secures the prolapse, warms and tonifies the spleen and kidneys.

 [Indications]

Chronic diarrhea, chronic dysentery, prolapse of the rectum due to spleen deficiency and cold, with looseness of the stool and inability to retain it, abdominal pain relieved by pressure and warmth, or dysentery with red and white discharge, or pus and blood in the stool, frequent bowel movements day and night, tenesmus, urgency, umbilical abdominal pain, fatigue, and poor appetite. From “Yi Fang”: (1) Treats chronic diarrhea and dysentery, without red and white discharge, with deficiency cold and rectal prolapse. (2) Also treats dysentery with red and white discharge, umbilical abdominal pain, and frequent bowel movements day and night.

 [Additions and Subtractions]

(1) If spleen and kidney deficiency cold is severe, with cold hands and feet, add Aconite Root and Dried Ginger to warm the kidney and spleen. (2) For rectal prolapse, add raw Ma Huang and Astragalus Root to tonify Qi and lift the prolapse. (3) If spleen and kidney deficiency cold is accompanied by heat, remove Cinnamon Bark and add Bullen Herb and Coptis Rhizome to clear heat. (4) If visceral cold is severe: add Aconite Root.

 [Pharmacology]

It has the effects of neutralizing stomach acid, anti-ulcer, inhibiting pepsin activity, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic.
