[Formula Meaning]
“Supplemented and Revised”: Zhao Liang states that “Fei disease” (a type of stroke) is when the Ying and Wei qi and blood do not nourish the interior and exterior, leading to the body not functioning, joints not moving freely, and spirit not being sustained. This condition can be either deficient or excess. Deficient conditions are caused by diet, overexertion, or emotional factors, such as “internal depletion leading to厥” mentioned in “Neijing,” which presents as conditions like “yin fei.” Excess conditions are caused by external factors like wind, cold, summer heat, or dampness. Deficient conditions should not be treated with methods for excess, as doing so will dissipate qi and blood. This formula is explicitly for “wind fei,” which belongs to the excess evils of Ying and Wei. Therefore, “Xu Ming” (continuing life) is used. “Xu Ming” is a modification of 麻黃湯/’>Ephedra Decoction, with the addition of dried ginger to open the blood that has received cold evil, Gypsum Fibrosum to resolve the wind evil that has received the muscles, Angelica Sinensis to harmonize blood, Ginseng to tonify qi, and Sichuan Lovage Rhizome to move blood and disperse wind. It also treats counterflow of qi upwards, and puffy face, all of which are attributed to wind-cold.
[Function]
Dispels wind, clears heat, regulates qi, and nourishes blood.
[Efficacy]
“Fei” due to stroke, characterized by involuntary body movements, inability to control bodily functions, inability to speak, clouded consciousness and unconsciousness, lack of pain sensation, or stiffness preventing turning. Also treats postpartum women with excessive blood loss, as well as the elderly and children. Also treats inability to lie down, counterflow of qi upwards, and facial swelling. Similar to Major Green Dragon Decoction syndromes, but with signs of blood deficiency. “Supplemented and Revised”: “Fei” due to stroke, characterized by inability to control bodily functions, inability to speak, unconsciousness, lack of pain sensation, or stiffness preventing turning.
[Indications]
Hemiplegia and speech disorders caused by cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral softening, etc. Hypertension, neuralgia, facial nerve paralysis, arthritis.
[Mnemonic]
