【Prescription Explanation】

“Yi Fang”: This is a formula for the Tai Yang and Tai Yin meridians of the hand and foot. (1) Li Shizhen said: Phlegm and saliva are substances that move with Qi, ascending and descending, reaching everywhere. When they enter the Heart, they cause madness. When they enter the Lung, they obstruct the orifices, causing panting, cough, and coldness of the back. When they enter the Liver, they cause pain in the diaphragm, dry retching, and alternating chills and fever. When they enter the meridians, they cause numbness, paralysis, and pain. When they enter the tendons and bones, they cause pulling and aching pain. When they enter the skin and flesh, they cause scrofula and sores. Chen Wuzhe’s “San Yin Fang” uses Kong Xian Dan to treat them. The root of phlegm is water and dampness. When it combines with Qi and fire, it congeals into phlegm. (2) Radix Euphorbiae Fischeri: Can drain water and dampness from the Zang-Fu organs. (3) Radix Euphorbiae Kansui: Can clear water and dampness in the meridians. (4) Semen Sinapis Albae: Can disperse phlegm-Qi in the skin and membranes. (5) Only those who are skilled in its use can achieve remarkable results.

 【Functions】

Expels phlegm and eliminates fluid, reduces swelling and detoxifies.

 【Indications】

Phlegm and saliva are lodged in the chest and diaphragm, causing sudden, unbearable pain in the neck, chest, back, and hips, pulling and aching pain in the tendons and bones that moves around, or cold numbness in the limbs, or unbearable headache. Or mental dullness, drowsiness, loss of appetite, sticky and thick phlegm, rattling sound in the throat at night, and excessive salivation. “Yi Fang”: Treats sudden pulling and aching pain in the chest, back, hands, feet, hips, and neck, affecting tendons and bones, which moves around unpredictably, or cold numbness in the limbs, and blocked Qi and pulse. This is due to phlegm and saliva in the chest and diaphragm, mistakenly diagnosed as paralysis, which is incorrect.

 【Applications】

Abdominal distention with fluid accumulation, scanty red urine, edema of the limbs, epilepsy, lymphadenitis.

 【Modifications】

“Yi Fang”: (1) Severe phlegm: Increase the number of pills. (2) Beriberi: Add Semen Arecae, Fructus Chaenomelis, pine resin, and Herba Selaginellae. (3) Phlegm due to fright: Add 砂/’>Realgar and Scorpio Acetum. (4) Masses due to fright and Qi: Add 甲/’>Squama Manis Pentadactyli, turtle shell, Rhizoma Corydalis, and Rhizoma Curcumae Zedoariae. (5) Hot phlegm: Add saltpeter. (6) Cold phlegm: Add Fructus Piperis Nigri, Flos Caryophylli, ginger, and cinnamon.

 【Pharmacology】

Has antitussive, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory effects.
