【Formula Meaning】

Re-edited Vernacular Shanghan Lun: The Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Channel and the Hand Shaoyang Triple Energizer are a single channel. Its Qi transformation is partly in the Gallbladder to transform food and water, and partly in the Triple Energizer to circulate the body’s defenses. If it is obstructed by dampness and oppressed by heat, the Qi movement of the Triple Energizer will be impaired, and the Ministerial Fire in the Gallbladder will become excessive. Therefore, Artemisia annua, Scutellaria baicalensis, and Bamboo shavings are used as the monarch to clear and vent the Gallbladder fire. When Gallbladder fire is excessive, it must attack the Stomach and cause fluid to stagnate into phlegm. Therefore, Citrus aurantium and the two processed ingredients are used as ministers to harmonize the Stomach and transform phlegm. Only when the Qi movement in the lower Jiao is unobstructed can the Ministerial Fire in the Gallbladder be cleared and harmonized. Therefore, Bi Yu San is added as an assistant to guide the Ministerial Fire downward. Red Scutellaria baicalensis is used as a guide to expel damp-heat downwards, all of which are eliminated through the Bladder. This is an excellent formula for harmonizing and resolving the Gallbladder channel. It is effective for chest fullness with nausea, and alternating chills and fever like malaria. Fang Ji Xue Tang: Artemisia annua is bitter, cold, aromatic, clearing the Gallbladder and penetrating heat. Scutellaria baicalensis is bitter, cold, clearing and draining Gallbladder heat, and can also dry dampness. Together, they are the main herbs in the formula, which can clear the Shaoyang damp-heat internally and also expel the pathogen externally. Bamboo shavings clear Gallbladder and Stomach heat, transform phlegm, and stop vomiting. Pinellia tuber dries dampness, transforms phlegm, harmonizes the Stomach, and descends rebellious Qi. When combined with Bamboo shavings, it achieves the effects of clearing heat, transforming phlegm, harmonizing the Stomach, and descending rebellious Qi. Red Poria cocos promotes urination and dries dampness. Tangerine peel regulates Qi, transforms phlegm, and opens the chest and diaphragm. These four herbs together form the secondary ingredients of the formula. Citrus aurantium regulates Qi, opens the chest, and relieves distention and fullness, serving as an assistant ingredient. Bi Yu San ( Talc, Licorice, Indigo naturalis) clears heat and promotes urination, serving as the guiding ingredient to expel pathogens through urination.

 【Efficacy】

Dampness oppression and heat congestion, unimpeded Qi circulation in the Triple Energizer, excessive Ministerial Fire in the Gallbladder, leading to chest tightness, nausea, alternating chills and fever like malaria, mild chills and severe heat, bitter taste, chest tightness, vomiting sour bitter water, or vomiting yellow sticky phlegm, or even dry heaving and hiccups, distending pain in the chest and flanks, red tongue with white greasy coating, rapid, wiry and slippery pulse.

 【Indications】

Malaria, acute and chronic cholecystitis, high fever, periodic fever, infectious diseases, etc.

 【Mnemonic】

Chen Ling Qin Zhi Zhu Ban Hao → Chen Ling Qin Zhi Zou Ban Zhi Hao Qu.

 【Modifications】

(1) For excessive sour vomiting, add Zuo Jin Wan to clear heat, dry dampness, descend rebellious Qi, and stop vomiting. (2) For severe dampness, add Grass fruit, Nutmeg to strengthen the spleen and dry dampness. (3) For general muscle soreness and pain, add Coix seed, Mulberry twig, 砂/’>Silkworm Sand to clear heat, remove dampness, and relieve pain. (4) For jaundice with excess heat, remove Pinellia tuber, Tangerine peel and add Artemisia capillaris, Gardenia, Phellodendron to clear heat and remove dampness. (5) For Stomach heat with distention and fullness, add Magnolia bark, Coptis chinensis to clear heat, remove dampness, and relieve distention and fullness. (6) For severe nausea and vomiting, add Hematite to enhance the effect of descending rebellious Qi. (7) For dizziness, add White Peony Root, Alisma orientale, Gastrodia elata to calm the liver and pacify Yang. (8) For tinnitus and hearing loss, add Chrysanthemum, Acorus gramineus, Alisma orientale to clear heat and open the orifices. (9) For painful urination with red urine, add Silybum marianum, Gardenia, Plantain seed to drain heat and promote urination.

Has antimalarial, choleretic, antibacterial, and antipyretic effects.
