【Formula Explanation】
Medical Formulas: A Foot Yangming and Shao Yin remedy. (1) Clove: Drains the Lungs, warms the Stomach, and warms the Kidneys. (2) Ginger: Resolves Phlegm, opens up depression, and disperses Cold. (3) Persimmon Calyx: Bitter and astringent to descend Qi. (4) Ginseng: Assists True Qi to spread. (5) Can also be used for Fire-type Hiccups, as it is a treatment for the opposite condition.
【Functions】
Tonifies Stomach Qi, disperses Stomach Cold, descends rebellious Stomach Qi, warms the Middle Jiao, and stops hiccups.
【Indications】
Hiccups and vomiting due to Deficiency and Cold of the Stomach Qi in chronic illness, with fullness and stuffiness in the chest and epigastrium, pale tongue with white coating, and deep, slow pulse. Medical Formulas: Hiccups, chronic hiccups, due to Cold.
【Modern Applications】
Diaphragmatic spasm, nervous hiccups, pregnancy vomiting, nervous vomiting; bile reflux gastritis, etc.

【Modifications】
(1) If there is concomitant Qi stagnation and Phlegm obstruction, add Pinellia and Citrus Peel to regulate Qi and transform Phlegm. (2) If Stomach Qi is not deficient, remove Ginseng; the formula is then named Persimmon Calyx Decoction from Ji Sheng Fang, and it treats persistent hiccups due to Stomach Cold. (3) Removing Ginger from this formula yields Persimmon Coin Powder from Jie Gu Jia Zhen, which treats hiccups and Stomach Qi Deficiency without significant Cold. (4) If Cold is severe, add Evodia and Dried Ginger to dispel Cold. (5) If Phlegm-Dampness is severe, add Magnolia Bark and Pinellia to dispel Dampness and Phlegm. (6) If there is concomitant Heat, indicating a combination of Cold and Heat, add Coptis and Bamboo Shavings to clear Heat and stop vomiting. (7) If Cold is extreme, with cold hands and feet and a deep, thready pulse, add Aconite Root and Dried Ginger, and remove Galangal and Cinnamon Bark.
