[Formula Analysis]
《Medical Formulas》: This is a universal formula for treating gout. (1) Huang Bai (Phellodendri Cortex): clears heat. Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma): dries dampness; Long Dan Cao (Gentianae Radix): drains fire. Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix): promotes water metabolism. These four ingredients treat dampness and heat. (2) Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma): dries phlegm and dispels wind, Tao Ren (Persicae Semen), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos): activate blood and dispel blood stasis, Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma): is the qi-moving herb in the blood, so it treats phlegm and blood. (3) Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma Seu Radix): dispels wind from the joints, Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix): eliminates wind from the head and face, Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Wei Ling Xian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma): dispels wind from the arms and legs, so these four ingredients treat wind. (4) The addition of Shen Qu (Massa Fermentata): clears accumulated qi in the middle jiao (middle burner). (5) Dispersing wind to vent upward, draining heat and promoting dampness to drain downward, activating blood, drying phlegm, and resolving stagnation to regulate the middle, so it can treat all causes and be used universally. If the symptoms don’t include all of these, adjust the dosage accordingly.
