【Formula Meaning】

《Han Dian》: Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu) and Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma) can eliminate damp-heat from the lower jiao, i.e., the lower abdomen. Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui) and Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao) can relieve pain, nourish and harmonize. Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin) clears intestinal heat.

 【Function】

Clears heat and drains stagnation, cools the blood and resolves toxins.

 【Indications】

Various types of hemorrhoids, constipation with frequent small amounts of bleeding, and severe local pain. It is used for general conditions where the symptoms are not particularly severe and do not lean towards deficiency or excess.

 【Applications】

Hemorrhoidal pain, anal fissures, hemorrhoidal bleeding, anal fissures, prolapse of the anus, pruritus of the female genitals, skin diseases.

 【Mnemonic】

Two Huangs (黃) are used as dried, sun-dried firewood (柴) to start a fire (升火木柴) (Radix Scutellariae (Huang Qin), Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao), Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma), Radix Bupleuri (Chai Hu)).

 【Modifications】

《Han Dian》: For constipation, increase the amount of Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang); if there is natural bowel movement, reduce or omit it. The author believes that if used for hemorrhoids, Radix et Rhizoma Rhei (Da Huang) can be removed, and Semen Persicae (Tao Ren), Cortex Moutan (Mu Dan Pi), and Herba Houttuyniae (Yu Xing Cao) can be added.
