[Rationale]

“Medical Formulas”: This formula addresses the Shaoyin of the Hand and Foot and the Taiyin of the Foot. The vital fire, the congenital true yang, is located between the two kidneys. All human activities are driven by this fire. If this fire declines, it cannot warm and transport the spleen and stomach, leading to a loss of appetite. (1) Cistanche deserticola, Morinda officinalis: These herbs can enter the blood aspect of the kidney channel. (2) Foeniculum vulgare: This herb can enter the qi aspect of the kidney channel. Together, they supplement the deficiency of the Mingmen fire, strengthening the fire which in turn strengthens the earth and allows the spleen to function properly. (3) Prepared Rehmannia glutinosa, Lycium barbarum: These are blood-tonifying herbs. When water is sufficient, it can nourish fire, preventing it from becoming excessive. (4) Eucommia ulmoides, Achyranthes bidentata: These herbs tonify the waist and knees to assist the kidneys. (5) Poria cocos, Dioscorea opposita: These herbs dispel dampness and heat to assist the spleen. (6) Cornus officinalis, Schisandra chinensis: These herbs generate lung fluid and secure essence. (7) Polygala tenuifolia, Acorus gramineus: These herbs unblock heart qi to connect with the kidneys. (8) Jujube: This herb tonifies qi and blood, moistens the lungs, and strengthens the spleen.
