[Formula Meaning]

From “Selected Annotations of Ancient Formulas”: The Supreme Treasure Pill is a formula that treats unconsciousness due to heart conditions, guiding from the exterior to the interior. Rhinoceros horn, calculus bovis, tortoise shell, and amber, being substances with spiritual properties, open the heart orifices internally; cinnabar, realgar, and gold and silver leaf, being heavy and descending herbs, anchor and calm the spirit; complemented by borneol, musk, and styrax benzoin to clear the hidden orifices. Li Gao said: Calculus bovis, borneol, and musk enter the bone marrow and penetrate the muscles and skin. Therefore, for heat entering the pericardium leading to a red tongue and unconsciousness, this pill used with a cold decoction can dispel the yin and raise the yang, immediately restoring consciousness, which other herbs cannot achieve. If the illness starts with a headache and then leads to unconsciousness and inability to speak, this indicates a deficiency of the liver with the spirit rising to the crown, and should be treated with oyster shell to rescue from rebellion and bring it down, which the Supreme Treasure Pill cannot resolve. Adjustments: (1) If vital energy is weak, add ginseng to tonify qi and support the upright, and combine with aromatic herbs that open the orifices to enhance recovery of consciousness and support the upright while dispelling evil. (2) If evil heat is rampant and the upright is not deficient, then take with virgin boy urine to nourish yin and reduce fire, which can also invigorate blood.
