【Formula Explanation】

《Medical Formulas》: This is a common formula for mild cases of wind-stroke affecting the six meridians. (1) Qin Jiao (Gentian Root): is the chief herb, dispelling wind from the entire body. (2) Shi Gao (Gypsum): is the deputy herb, dispersing fire from the chest. (3) Qiang Huo (Notopterygium Root): disperses wind from the Taiyang meridian. (4) Bai Zhi (Angelica Dahurica Root): disperses wind from the Yangming meridian. (5) Chuan Xiong (Szechuan Lovage Root): disperses wind from the Jueyin meridian. (6) Xi Xin (Asarum Root), Du Huo (Angelica Pubescens Root): disperse wind from the Shaoyin meridian. (7) Fang Feng (Siler Root): is a “foot soldier” of wind herbs, following wherever it is led. (8) Generally, internal damage will inevitably be triggered by external contraction. Although the herbs are said to dispel wind, they also release the exterior. Wind herbs tend to be drying, and exterior-releasing herbs tend to be dispersing, therefore, dispelling wind must first nourish the blood, and releasing the exterior must also consolidate the interior. (9) Dang Gui (Angelica Root): nourishes the blood, Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root): enriches the blood, Chuan Xiong: invigorates the blood. When the blood is invigorated, the wind disperses and the root of the tongue becomes supple. (10) Bai Shao (White Peony Root): astringes yin and harmonizes the blood. (11) Furthermore, qi can generate blood, therefore Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria Cocos), Gan Cao (Licorice Root): are used to tonify qi to strengthen the center, the spleen transforms and eliminates dampness, then the hands and feet will be strong. (12) Furthermore, wind can generate heat, therefore Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) is used to clear it, Shi Gao (Gypsum) to drain the middle, and Sheng Di (Fresh Rehmannia Root) to cool the lower burner, to jointly calm rebellious ascending fire.
