【Formula Analysis】
《Medical Formulae》: This is a formula for the Hand Shao Yin, Hand and Foot Tai Yin channels, and it tonifies Qi and Blood. (1) Shu Di, Dang Gui, Shao Yao: Blood nourishing ingredients. (2) Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, Gan Cao, Chen Pi: Qi-tonifying ingredients. If Blood is insufficient, tonify the Qi, meaning that when Yang is generated, Yin will grow. (3) Furthermore, Ren Shen, Huang Qi, and Wu Wei Zi: tonify the Lungs. (4) Gan Cao, Chen Pi, Fu Ling, and Bai Zhu: strengthen the Spleen. (5) Dang Gui and Shao Yao: nourish the Liver. (6) Shu Di: nourishes the Kidneys. (7) Yuan Zhi: can open Kidney Qi and allow it to reach the Heart. (8) Gui Xin: can guide all the herbs into the Ying level and generate Blood. (9) The five organs nourish and benefit each other, so this formula can treat many diseases, and its herbs nourish the Rong (nutrient) Qi. 《Commentary and Supplement》: Adding Chen Pi to move Qi makes the Qi-tonifying herbs more effective. Removing Chuan Xiong, which moves Blood, helps the Blood-tonifying herbs function better. A skilled practitioner can transform the body with just one addition and one subtraction. However, Qi can be summoned, but Blood is easily depleted and difficult to generate. If you don’t nourish the source of Blood, the Rong Qi will remain insufficient. Therefore, double the dose of Ren Shen as the chief herb, and supplement it with the bitter Yuan Zhi, which first enters the Heart to calm the spirit and settle the will, allowing the sweet and warm herbs to transform into Blood to nourish the body. Also, the Heart benefits from being supported and constrained with the sour taste of Wu Wei Zi, which restrains the spirit and allows the Rong Qi to flow through the vessels to nourish the four organs. This formula is named Yang Rong (Nourishing the Nutrient Qi), and it does not need to retain the name of Shi Quan Da Bu Tang (Ten-Evcellent Tonifying Decoction) to achieve such effectiveness.
