【Formula Rationale】

《Yi Fang》: For upward qi that needs to descend, use Areca Seed and Agarwood. (2) For rebellious qi that needs to be smoothed, use Lindera Root plus Ginseng. This combination allows for descending with ascending, and purging with tonifying, to avoid damaging qi. (3) For severe stagnation, Fructus Aurantii Immaturus can be used. 《Shan Bu》: The method is to first tonify the upright qi with Ginseng, then direct it to the kidney with Agarwood, and finally guide it with Areca Seed and Lindera Root. This is known as supporting deficiency before purging, and tonifying before purging. All four ingredients have thick tastes and qi. When ground, their qi and taste are fully utilized. When decocted, their qi and taste are pure and harmonious, achieving prompt results. 《Cheng Fang Bian Du》: Use Areca Seed and Agarwood, which are pungent, opening the diaphragm, and strong in promoting qi movement, and can ascend or descend, as the chief herbs. Assist them with Lindera Root, which circulates qi in the twelve meridians. The cause of rebellious qi is deficiency. If the original qi is sufficient and the meridians flow smoothly, there will be no such symptoms. Therefore, Ginseng is used to supplement what is lacking. Otherwise, the qi may descend temporarily and the stagnation may be relieved briefly, but it will soon close again. Thus, ancient physicians often used them together. If there is pure excess without deficiency, Ginseng can be removed and Fructus Aurantii Immaturus can be added.
