【Function】

Expels wind and eliminates dampness, tonifies qi and invigorates blood, promotes blood circulation, and strengthens sinews and bones.

 【Indication】

For qi and blood deficiency leading to numbness and weakness of the lower limbs. Also used for dysenteric wind, characterized by weak and painful feet after dysentery, making walking difficult; He Xi Feng (crane’s knee wind), with swollen and painful knees, thin upper and lower legs, resembling a crane’s knee, causing inability to flex or extend the knee. It also treats deep-rooted carbuncle with swelling and pain, with or without local swelling.

 【Indications】

Applicable to chronic rheumatic arthritis, ankylosis of the knee joint, hemiplegia, myelitis, osteomyelitis, postpartum beriberi, and postpartum flaccidity and weakness. It is used for conditions of poor blood circulation in the lower limbs due to chronic rheumatic arthritis or knee osteoarthritis, resulting in swelling and pain of the knee joint, thinning of the lower limbs, and ankylosis of the joint, leading to an inability to flex or extend the knee, known as “He Xi Feng.” This formula is most commonly used for this condition. It is also frequently used for lower limb paralysis caused by postpartum weakness or complications of embolism, and for lower body paralysis caused by spinal tuberculosis. Moreover, it can be used for lower limb paralysis from stroke, beriberi, and chronic myelitis, provided the condition is of a deficiency type. It can promote blood circulation, strengthen sinews and bones, and dispel toxins, cold, and dampness. It is not suitable for cases with excess patterns.

 【Mnemonic】

Da Huang Feng” (Major Ledebouriella wind) has Sheng Yu Tang (Sage Recovery Decoction) + “Da Zhong Qiang Niu Fu Zhu Jiang Cao” (Big Crowd Strong Ox Aconite Atractylodes Ginger Licorice) (仲羌牛附朮薑草).

 【Modifications】

For difficulty with urination and defecation, add Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) and Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng), 18 zhu each, Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) 30 pieces, and Sheng Jiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) 3 liang. Boil to 3 sheng and divide into 3 doses. According to 《Shen Shi》, add Tian Men Dong (Radix Asparagi) 1 liang.
