【Formula Analysis】

According to Han Dian: The Cang Zhu, Hou Po, and Chen Pi in this formula are the essence of Ping Wei San (Calm the Stomach Powder), used to strengthen the spleen and stomach, and resolve accumulated food and retained fluids. Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Zhu Ling, and Ze Xie constitute Si Ling Tang (Four Ingredient Poria Powder), aiming to promote urination and eliminate retained fluids. Zhi Shi, Xiang Fu, Da Fu Pi, and Sha Ren are used to regulate qi and treat abdominal distension.

 【Function】

Strengthens the stomach, broadens the middle jiao, promotes water metabolism, and resolves stagnation.

 【Indication】

A digestive agent aimed at regulating qi, resolving food stagnation, treating edema, and abdominal fullness leading to distension, spleen deficiency causing swelling, fullness, and stuffiness. Generally used in the early stages of ascites with abdominal distension, for cases of excess. Effective for symptoms such as epigastric fullness and hardness, scanty urination, tendency to constipation, distension that is forceful and substantial, fullness and stuffiness after eating, belching, and acid regurgitation, even after consuming only a small amount.

 【Indications】

Exudative peritonitis, edema from nephritis, ascites, abdominal distension.

 【Mnemonic】

Wu Ling San (Five Ingredient Poria Powder) (-Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig)) + Ping Wei San (Calm the Stomach Powder) (-Gan Jiang, Da Zao) + Only Two Xiang Fu Pi Without Ren (Zhi Shi, Xiang Fu, Mu Xiang, Da Fu Pi, Sha Ren).

 【Modifications】

(1) For shortness of breath, add Chen Xiang (Agarwood); (2) For swelling and distension, add Radish Seed; (3) For hypochondriac pain and dark complexion (qi distension), add Qing Pi (Green Citrus Peel), remove Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome); (4) For hypochondriac fullness, small intestine distension, and blood streaks on the body (blood distension), add Dang Gui (Angelica Root), Bai Shao (White Peony Root), Hong Hua (Safflower), Mu Dan Pi (Moutan Bark), remove Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria); (5) For belching, acid regurgitation, fullness, and abdominal distension (food distension), add Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), Mai Ya (Barley Sprout), Radish Seed, remove Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria); (6) For aversion to cold, cold extremities, and clear watery diarrhea (water distension), add Guan Gui (Cinnamon Bark); (7) For chest and abdominal distension with palpable masses (fixed masses distension), add Shan Zha (Hawthorn Fruit), Shen Qu (Medicated Leaven), Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome), Qing Pi (Green Citrus Peel), Gui Wei (Angelica Tail), Xuan Hu (Corydalis Rhizome), Bie Jia (Turtle Shell), remove Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome), Fu Ling (Poria), Zhu Ling (Polyporus), Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome).
