【Formula Actions】
*Yifang*: It is a formula for the Foot Shaoyin and Jueyin channels. (1) Wind generates heat, and heat generates wind; without Bupleurum Root (Chaihu) and Large-leaf Gentian Root (Qinjiao), pathogenic wind cannot be expelled externally. (2) Soft-shelled turtle (Bie): a yin substance; its shell (jia) is used, implying its action reaches the bones. (3) Fructus Mume (Wumei): Sour and astringent, it can guide other herbs into the bones to astringe heat. (4) Sweet Wormwood (Qinghao): Bitter and cold, it can accompany other herbs into the muscles to relieve steaming fever. (5) Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu): Nourishes yin. (6) Chinese Angelica Root (Danggui): Harmonizes blood. (7) Lycii Cortex (Digupi): Disperses superficial evils and clears internal heat, and is an excellent herb for stopping sweating and dispelling steaming fever.
【Functions】
Nourishes yin and blood, clears heat, and dispels steaming fever.
【Indications】
Yin deficiency and blood vacuity, external contraction of wind-evil transmitting internally and transforming into heat, leading to ‘wind taxation’ (consumptive disease), bone-steaming tidal fever, with symptoms such as emaciation, red lips and cheeks, coarse breathing, mental fatigue, limb weariness, night sweats, cough, and a thin, rapid pulse. *Yifang*: Wind taxation with bone-steaming, afternoon high fever, cough, emaciation, red cheeks, night sweats, and a thin, rapid pulse.
【Applications】
Pediatric fever, pulmonary tuberculosis, amenorrhea, and other conditions.
【Mnemonics】
(1) Diligently call, don’t marry (for <a href='https://whatsintcm.com/dt_articles/Qinjiao Biejia San) — “Aunt is beautiful, don’t pay attention to the drunkard” (refers to Digupi, Zhimu, Qinghao, Wumei, Biejia, Chaihu, Qinjiao, Danggui). (2) “Mother-in-law acts as tiger skin” (refers to Qinjiao, Biejia, Zhimu, Danggui, Chaihu, Digupi).
【Modifications】
(1) If yin deficiency is severe, add Rehmannia Root (Shengdi) and Ophiopogon Root (Maidong) to enhance the yin-nourishing effect. (2) If heat evil is severe, add Picrorhiza Rhizome (Hú Huánglián) to enhance the heat-clearing effect. (3) If coughing is severe, add Stemona Root (Baibu) and Tussilago Flower (Kuandonghua) to relieve cough and calm asthma. (4) This formula, removing Chinese Angelica Root (Danggui), Sweet Wormwood (Qinghao), Fructus Mume (Wumei), and adding stir-fried Astragalus Root (Zhi Huangqi), Asparagus Root (Tiandong), Poria (Fuling), Mulberry Root Bark (Sangbaipi), Aster Root (Ziyuan), Pinellia Tuber (Banxia), White Peony Root (Baishao), Rehmannia Root (Shengdi), stir-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gancao), Ginseng (Renshen), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Cinnamon Bark (Rougui), etc., becomes Huangqi Biejia San from *Weisheng Baojian*. It primarily treats ‘guest heat’ due to vacuity taxation in men and women, characterized by vexation and heat in the five centers (palms, soles, chest), limb fatigue, cough with dry throat, spontaneous sweating, reduced appetite, or afternoon fever.
