【Formula Analysis】

《Medical Formulas》: A Taiyin and Yangming formula. (1) Zanthoxylum: Acrid and hot, enters the Lung to disperse cold, enters the Spleen to warm the Stomach, and enters the Kidney to tonify the fire of the Mingmen. (2) Dried Ginger: Acrid and hot, unblocks the Heart, assists Yang, dispels cold, and disperses rebellious Qi. (3) Ginseng: Sweet and warm, greatly tonifies the Qi of the Spleen and Lung. (4) Maltose (Yi Tang): Sweet and can tonify the Earth element, and its gentleness harmonizes the middle Jiao. (5) Generally speaking, the human body relies on the Middle Qi as the foundation. The formula uses acrid, spicy, sweet, and warm herbs to warm and strengthen the organs within, greatly dispelling Yin from the lower Jiao and restoring Yang in the upper Jiao. 《Han Dictionary》: This formula is composed of Zanthoxylum (Sichuan Pepper), Dried Ginger, Ginseng, and Maltose. Zanthoxylum and Dried Ginger are warming and stimulating, providing vitality to relaxed tissues and causing them to contract. The warming and cold-dispersing power of this formula is greater than that of Xiao Jian Zhong Tang (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction), and it can also expel worms and treat vertigo. The abdominal pain in Da Jian Zhong Tang syndrome, which is aggravated by pressure, is a phenomenon of Middle Yang decline and excessive internal Yin-Cold. The painful area is the lower abdomen, the pattern is biased towards Cold, and the focus is on dispersing cold and relieving pain.

 【Indications】

Decline of Middle Yang, excessive internal Yin-Cold, severe cold pain in the heart, chest, and abdomen, vomiting and inability to eat, abdominal distension and upward rushing Qi, aversion to cold, skin rising up, appearing to have heads and feet, pain above and below, and unable to be touched. Used for abdominal pain caused by cold in the interior and intestinal peristalsis disturbance. 《Medical Formulas》: Severe cold pain in the heart and chest, vomiting and inability to eat, cold Qi rising up in the abdomen, skin rising up, appearing to have heads and feet, pain above and below, and unable to be touched.

 【Suitable For】

Gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, cold-deficient gastric spasm, enteritis, intestinal peristalsis instability, intestinal stenosis (especially caused by intestinal adhesions), intestinal atony, urinary stones, ascariasis, abdominal pain, etc.

 【Contraindications】

It is contraindicated for those with internal accumulation of substantial heat, damp-heat accumulation, Yin deficiency with blood heat, and internal accumulation of blood stasis with heat causing abdominal pain.

 【Modifications】

(1) If abdominal pain is severe, add Mu Xiang (Aucklandia Root) and Yan Hu Suo (Corydalis Rhizome) to promote Qi circulation and stop pain. (2) If accompanied by abdominal distension, add Hou Po (Magnolia Bark) and Xiao Hui Xiang (Fennel Fruit) to promote Qi circulation. (3) If interior cold is severe, add Wu Zhu Yu (Evodia Fruit) to warm the interior and dispel cold. (4) If vomiting is severe, add Ban Xia (Pinellia Rhizome) and Sheng Jiang (Fresh Ginger) to stop vomiting. (5) If Spleen deficiency is severe, add Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome) to strengthen the Spleen. (6) If accompanied by blood deficiency, add Dang Gui (Angelica Root) and Bai Shao (White Peony Root) to tonify blood. (7) This formula with the addition of Gui Zhi (Cinnamon Twig) and Bai Zhu (White Atractylodes Rhizome) treats stubborn rheumatic arthritis. (8) This formula with the addition of Dang Shen (Codonopsis Root), Fu Ling (Poria), and Ze Xie (Alisma Rhizome) treats Spleen and Kidney deficient cold with edema and leukorrhea. (9) For urgency and cramping, add 3 liang each of Shao Yao (Peony Root) and Gui Xin (Cinnamon Bark); for cold hands and feet, and cold back and waist, add 1 mei of Fu Zi (Aconite Root); for fatigue, add 1 liang of Huang Qi (Astragalus Root). (10) For cough, add Kuan Dong Hua (Coltsfoot Flower); for coughing blood, add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin); for seminal emission, add Long Gu (Fossilized Bones); for palpitations, add Fu Shen (Poria with Wood Root).
